Bollywood Theater is one of the really fun places to eat in Portland thanks to the decor. ![]() ![]() For lunch or a quick dinner alone, the kati roll, an oil-charged paratha bread wrap stuffed with egg, pickled onion, green chutney and beef is as filling as a burrito. Or pair the sweet purple and gold beets with the custard-yolked egg masala. It’s a casual, order-at-the-counter type place where you won’t find your Americanized Indian food normal menu items (no buttered chicken). Start with crisp okra chips and raita dip, good enough to make an okra hater rethink the sometimes slimy pod, then add the plump, brilliant Goan shrimp. Bollywood Theater (NE + SE) One of my favorite street food style Indian restaurants in Portland, Oregon, Bollywood Theater is really so portland. The best bet at either restaurant is to choose a good mix of crunchy snacks, vegetable sides and larger plates. The menus at both locations are mostly the same, for now. Today, MacLarty's dialed-in renditions of Southern Indian street snacks draw long lines at both the original Northeast Portland storefront and a larger restaurant and market in the heart of Southeast Division Street's restaurant row. Imagine chef Troy MacLarty's luggage after his first research trip to India: suitcases packed to the brim with recipe notes, Indian movie posters, trinkets destined for the walls at Bollywood Theater and the lingering aroma of southern Indian street food.
